B
A piece of paper with a list of candidates. You mark a cross on this paper next to the name of the person you choose.
C
The group that the Prime Minister chooses to run the Government. Each Cabinet minister runs a Government department, for example, the Minister for Health will run the Department for Health.
A person who wants to represent the people in their area by becoming a politician. They want people in their area to vote for them at an election.
They work in Government departments but they are not politicians. For example, if a minister needs information about accessible transport, they ask a civil servant who works in the Department of Transport to find it for them.
A group of people who work together to share ideas about something, for example, a committee can get together to look at how people on benefits can work, or bullying in the workplace or at school.
The money people pay to the council for services like rubbish collection, libraries and Social Services.

The Government has lots of things to think about, like money, health, education, so to make it easier they set up different offices called departments. For example, the department responsible for people’s health is called the Department for Health.
E
An independent group set up by Parliament. They are there to make sure that elections are carried out properly. They make sure people understand it is important to register to vote, and know how to vote.
This usually means nature and the air, the trees, rivers, and land around us. Sometimes we say ‘environment’ to mean everything around us, which can include the buildings and roads people have built on the land.

This is the time when people choose Members of Parliament and the Government to help run the country.

This is the person who is the head of the country, for example a Queen or a President.
This is where MPs meet and work, where they make speeches, ask questions and make decisions for the whole country.
This is where the Lords or Peers meet and work. Their job is to check what the Government is doing and help decide on new laws.

This is something that the law says you should not do. If you do something illegal you can get into trouble with the police.
L
A local election is when you can vote for your local politicians, called councillors. They make decisions about your local area and local services.
Local politicians are ordinary people who are elected to help make decisions about local services. There are different types of local politician and they are called councillors.
Lords are not chosen by the public and do not get elected. Lords and Peers are people chosen by the prime minister and other political party leaders and given a job by the Queen. This job is to discuss the Government and help to decide on new laws.
M
A manifesto is often written down and tells people what a political parties main ideas are.
MEPs are politicians you can vote for who represent you when it comes to making decisions about the European Union.
Your MP is a politician who represents you when it comes to making decisions about things that affect the whole country.
You can vote to choose your MP at a General Election.

This is the political party that comes second in a general election. It is their job to keep an eye on what the Government does, and to say what they would do if they were the Government.

This is where Parliament is based in London, and is the place where important decisions are made about running the whole country.
A petition is about a lot of people asking someone important, like the Prime Minister, to do something.
This is a group of people who join together because they have similar ideas about things, like how to run the country.
Politicians are ordinary people who decide they want to help run the country. They become politicians by winning an election.
Politics is the name for the way groups of people make decisions about running the country. The people who help make these decisions are called politicians.
This is a private place in a polling station, where you vote for someone in an election by putting a cross on a ballot paper.
A card sent to people who are registered to vote. It tells them about when an election is going to happen and where they can go to vote.
This is a place like a school, hall or community centre where an election takes place.
This is a ballot paper that is sent through the post. It means someone can vote at home.

The council has a register which is a list of all the people who can vote in an area. You must fill in a form and tell the council if you want to register to vote.

A group of people who work for the council and provide services for those who need support.
