4. See what other people are doing
Some organisations have already made a start with making information accessible and are willing to share.
Don't reinvent the wheel! Using this CD as a starting point, you can link in to all sorts of help and ideas. And don't forget, the organisations who are most successful in providing accessible information for people with learning disabilities are those who work with people from the start.
Similarly the work you do could inspire others.
Look for examples of good communication in your everyday lives. Become more aware of how information is presented to you. How is information presented on leaflets you get through the door at home? How good is the information you get when you go to your bank/ building society/ supermarket?
You can use some of the examples from this CD to compare. You can also look at what other people are doing.
Tip
The 'Find out more' page is a good starting point to see what other people are doing.
Make it part of your work plan to chart progress.
It's easy to have good intentions but not to stick to things.
Share your lessons with others — be part of the change
Tell people what steps you are making. Make sure people know you are trying. Tell people on your website that things are available in other formats and make it easy for them to ask for things.
Make it clear in your publications that people can ask for things in another format — even if you still need to produce it. It's better to be willing than to ignore the issue.
You could set up a working party with other stakeholders to tackle issues you all face. Let organisations like United Response know what you are doing and get us involved.
